Herndon Monument Climb - At the sound of a cannon blast, 1,000 eager, screaming plebes charge toward a 21-foot grey monument that taunted them all year. They attempt to climb the lard-covered obelisk as thousands of spectators watch with the hopes that they complete the task quickly. This event at the U.S. Naval Academy is known simply as "Herndon" or the "Plebe Recognition Ceremony."

The plebe class works together to accomplish the goal of retrieving a white plebe "dixie cup" hat from atop the monument and replace it with an upperclassmen's hat. It is a tradition that has endured at the Naval Academy for many years. More than 200 pounds of lard applied to the monument by upperclass midshipmen complicate the task.

Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, and Freedom to Marry have released a joint statement in response to news earlier today that the Canadian government had served notice by way of a court case that thousands of same-sex marriages by foreigners in that country could be invalidated, news which has prompted an international outcry. UK Spy Agency MI5 Named as Gay-Friendly Employer

Britain’s domestic spy agency MI5 was named as one of the country’s most gay-friendly employers Wednesday.

MI5 was ranked 62 out of 100 for being one of the best employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff, according to a list compiled by the equality charity Stonewall.

Ernst and Young topped the list, which is based on a confidential survey of more than 7,500 lesbian, gay and bisexual employees.

"The Security Service has worked hard in recent years to promote equality and diversity across all areas of its work," said Jonathan Evans, MI5’s director general. "We are pleased to be recognized by Stonewall, but there is still more we can do." Full story here!

The top elections official in a socially conservative North Carolina county has resigned, saying she could not in good conscience preside over the upcoming vote on a proposed amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriage.

Former Harnett County Elections Director Sherre Toler said her romantic relationship with a man of a different race cemented her belief that the civil rights of people in love shouldn’t be determined by majority rule. Full story here!

Gay Marriage Within Reach in Washington State Legislature

The Legislature is on the verge of having enough support to make Washington the seventh state to approve gay marriage, according to a tally by The Associated Press.

A same-sex marriage bill is expected to be introduced by the end of the week. The AP reached out to all 49 state senators over the past week and found that more lawmakers are firmly supporting gay marriage than opposing it, by a margin of 22-18.

The measure needs 25 votes to pass the Senate. The House is widely expected to have enough support, and Gov. Chris Gregoire publicly endorsed gay marriage for the first time last week. Full story here!

Vote on N.H. Marriage Equality Repeal Bill Expected Next Week

New Hampshire lawmakers are expected to vote on a bill next week that would repeal the state’s marriage equality law.

Sources familiar with the legislative calendar indicate that the vote will likely take place on Jan. 18. The measure is expected to pass in the Republican-controlled Legislature, but Gov. John Lynch has said he would veto the measure. It remains unclear whether there are enough votes to override the governor’s veto. Full story here!

Madonna Reveals Title of New Album -- M.D.N.A.

Madonna fans (that's me!), we have a title for the Queen of Pop's eagerly anticipated new album.

In a pre-taped interview for the UK'sGraham Norton Show yesterday, the singer revealed that her 12th studio album will be called MDNA.

She later confirmed the news on her official website.

The album - her first since 2008'sHard Candy - is expected to drop in late March, and will include her forthcoming single Gimme All Your Luvin.

Word is the new track - which features rappers Nicki Minaj and MIA - is due to hit US radio stations on February 7, shortly after her appearance at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show on February 5 in Indiana. (Source)
